AMO

Also known as: After Market Order, after-hours order

TradingBeginner

An order placed outside regular NSE/BSE trading hours (9:15 AM - 3:30 PM) that gets queued and executed when the market opens next.

An After Market Order (AMO) allows investors to place buy or sell orders outside the regular trading session on NSE (9:15 AM to 3:30 PM IST). These orders are collected by the broker and submitted to the exchange during the pre-open session the next trading day.

AMOs are particularly useful for working professionals who cannot monitor markets during trading hours. Most Indian brokers — including Zerodha, Groww, and Angel One — accept AMOs from approximately 3:45 PM (after market close) until 8:57 AM the next trading day (before pre-open begins). The exact window varies by broker and segment (equity, F&O, commodity).

When you place an AMO, it is treated as a Limit Order or Market Order during the next session's opening. For equity delivery, AMOs placed as market orders get the opening price. For limit orders, execution depends on whether the specified price is hit. In the F&O segment, AMO availability and margin requirements may differ from regular hours.

One important consideration: overnight news or global market movements can cause significant gaps between the previous close and next open. An AMO placed at the previous closing price of Rs 2,400 for Infosys might execute at Rs 2,450 if Asian markets rallied overnight, resulting in a worse fill for buy orders. Using limit orders instead of market orders for AMOs gives better price control.

Indian brokers typically do not charge extra for AMO facility. The order appears in your order book with an "AMO" tag and converts to a regular order at market open. If not executed during the day, it expires — AMOs do not carry forward like Good Till Cancelled orders.
