AUM

Also known as: Assets Under Management

Mutual FundsBeginner

The total market value of all investments managed by a mutual fund, PMS, or financial institution, used as a key measure of fund size and industry scale.

Assets Under Management (AUM) represents the total market value of all financial assets that a fund house, portfolio manager, or financial institution manages on behalf of its clients. It is the primary metric for measuring the size and scale of an investment management business.

AUM fluctuates based on two factors: net inflows/outflows (new investments minus redemptions) and market performance (appreciation or depreciation of existing holdings). If a mutual fund has Rs 10,000 crore AUM and the market rises 10%, its AUM grows to approximately Rs 11,000 crore even without new investments.

In India, the mutual fund industry's total AUM crossed Rs 65 lakh crore (Rs 65 trillion) in 2024, managed by 44 SEBI-registered Asset Management Companies (AMCs). SBI Mutual Fund leads with over Rs 10 lakh crore AUM, followed by HDFC Mutual Fund and ICICI Prudential Mutual Fund. AMFI (Association of Mutual Funds in India) publishes monthly AUM data for the entire industry.

For investors evaluating mutual funds, AUM matters because it affects fund operations. Very small AUM (below Rs 500 crore) can mean higher Expense Ratio since fixed costs are spread over fewer assets. Very large AUM (above Rs 30,000 crore) in mid-cap or small-cap funds can make it difficult for the fund manager to enter and exit positions without impacting stock prices. The "sweet spot" for actively managed equity funds is generally Rs 2,000-20,000 crore.

AUM is also relevant for PMS (Portfolio Management Services) and AIF (Alternative Investment Funds) regulated by SEBI. PMS requires a minimum investment of Rs 50 lakh and the manager must be registered with SEBI. Total PMS industry AUM in India exceeds Rs 30 lakh crore, including both discretionary and non-discretionary mandates.
