A company ranked 101st to 250th by full market capitalisation, offering a balance of growth potential and relative stability.
Mid-cap stocks are companies ranked 101st to 250th by full Market Cap on Indian exchanges, as defined by SEBI's mutual fund categorisation framework. These companies are typically well-established businesses that have graduated beyond the small-cap stage but are not yet among the largest corporations.
Examples of Indian mid-cap stocks include companies like Indian Hotels, Voltas, Trent, Persistent Systems, and Coforge — businesses with market caps typically ranging from ₹15,000 crore to ₹60,000 crore (though this range shifts as markets move). The benchmark index for this segment is the Nifty Midcap 100 or Nifty Midcap 150.
Mid caps are often called the "sweet spot" of equity investing because they combine reasonable growth potential with manageable risk. Unlike small caps, mid-cap companies generally have established business models, decent management track records, and analyst coverage. Unlike Large Cap companies, they still have significant room to grow — a mid-cap can potentially double or triple in size, while a company like TCS or Reliance at ₹15+ lakh crore market cap has limited scope for such dramatic expansion.
However, mid caps are more volatile than large caps. During the 2020 COVID crash, the Nifty Midcap 100 fell roughly 40% compared to 38% for the Nifty 50, and the recovery was also more uneven. Liquidity is lower — daily trading volumes for mid-cap stocks are typically ₹20–200 crore compared to ₹500+ crore for large caps.
For portfolio allocation, mid-cap exposure of 15–25% is typical for moderate-risk investors. SEBI mandates that mid-cap Mutual Funds invest at least 65% in mid-cap stocks. Active fund management tends to add more value in the mid-cap space compared to large caps, as the segment is less efficiently researched and priced.
