Mutual FundsBeginner

A pooled investment vehicle managed by a professional fund manager that invests in a diversified portfolio of stocks, bonds, or other securities.

A mutual fund is a professionally managed investment vehicle that pools money from many investors to purchase a diversified portfolio of securities. Each investor owns "units" of the fund, and the value of each unit is the Net Asset Value (NAV), calculated daily by dividing the total portfolio value by the number of outstanding units.

In India, mutual funds are regulated by SEBI and managed by Asset Management Companies (AMCs) such as SBI MF, HDFC MF, ICICI Prudential MF, and Nippon India MF. The industry manages over ₹50 lakh crore in assets under management (AUM). SEBI's 2017 categorisation circular standardised fund categories into 36 types across equity, debt, hybrid, solution-oriented, and other categories.

Equity mutual funds invest primarily in stocks and are further classified by market cap (Large Cap, Mid Cap, small-cap, multi-cap, flexi-cap), sector (banking, IT, pharma), or strategy (value, growth, focused). Debt funds invest in bonds and money market instruments, classified by duration and credit quality. Hybrid funds combine equity and debt in defined proportions.

Investors can choose between Regular plans (purchased through a distributor who earns commission, resulting in higher expense ratios) and Direct plans (purchased directly from the AMC website or through platforms, with lower expense ratios). The expense ratio difference between Regular and Direct plans is typically 0.50%–1.00%, which compounds significantly over long holding periods.

SIP (Systematic Investment Plan) is the most popular way Indians invest in mutual funds. A SIP automatically invests a fixed amount (e.g., ₹5,000) every month, providing rupee cost averaging — you buy more units when prices are low and fewer when prices are high. SEBI data shows that SIP inflows have consistently exceeded ₹15,000 crore per month in recent years, reflecting growing financial awareness.
