Support

Also known as: Support Level, Floor

Technical AnalysisBeginner

A price level where buying pressure consistently prevents the stock from falling further, creating a floor for the price.

Support is a price level at which a stock or index tends to find buying interest, preventing the price from falling further. It is paired with Resistance as the two foundational concepts in Technical Analysis. Support levels form at previous lows, round numbers, moving average lines, and Fibonacci retracement levels.

The psychology behind support is intuitive. Buyers who missed an earlier rally see the pullback as a second chance and step in at the perceived "cheap" level. Traders who are already long add to their positions. Short sellers take profits. This collective buying creates a floor that absorbs selling pressure. The more times a support level is tested and holds, the stronger it is considered.

Identifying support in Indian stocks involves analysing price charts across timeframes. If HDFC Bank has bounced off INR 1,500 three times in the past six months, that level is established support. Moving averages (the 200-day SMA is particularly respected in Indian markets) also act as dynamic support. The Nifty 50 often finds support at its 200-day moving average during corrections.

When support breaks (a breakdown), it can trigger a cascade of selling. Traders who had buy orders at support cancel them, stop-loss orders below support get triggered, and fresh short sellers enter. The previous support level often becomes new Resistance — a principle called polarity. Breakdowns on high Trading Volume are more significant than those on low volume.

For traders, support levels serve multiple purposes: entry points for long trades (buy near support), stop-loss placement (just below support), and trend identification (higher lows indicate an uptrend). Indian market technicians often combine horizontal support with trendline support and moving average support for confluence — the more support indicators that cluster at a price level, the stronger the expected buying interest.

India Context

Nifty 200-DMA is widely watched as dynamic support. Round numbers serve as psychological support. Options open interest data reveals market-implied support levels.
