Technical AnalysisBeginner

A method of evaluating securities by analysing price charts, volume data, and mathematical indicators to forecast future price movements.

Technical analysis is the study of historical price and volume data to identify patterns and trends that can help predict future price movements. Unlike fundamental analysis, which evaluates a company's intrinsic value through financial statements, technical analysis focuses exclusively on market-generated data — what buyers and sellers have actually done with the stock.

The core premise is that all known information (fundamentals, sentiment, expectations) is already reflected in the stock price, and that prices move in identifiable Trends and patterns. Technical analysts use charts (candlestick, bar, line), indicators (RSI, MACD, moving averages), and pattern recognition (head and shoulders, double tops, flags) to make trading decisions.

In Indian markets, technical analysis is widely practiced by both retail and institutional traders. Every major broker platform — Zerodha Kite, Upstox Pro, Angel One — provides comprehensive charting tools. TradingView is the most popular third-party platform. Indian market-specific considerations include the pre-open session impact on opening prices, F&O expiry-related distortions, and the influence of FII/DII flow data on market direction.

Key technical analysis tools used by Indian traders include: Support and Resistance levels (horizontal and trendline), moving averages (50-day and 200-day SMAs are most watched), RSI for momentum, MACD for trend confirmation, and Bollinger Bands for volatility. Volume analysis is critical — price moves on high volume are more reliable than those on thin volume. Many traders also track options open interest data for Nifty and Bank Nifty as a technical input.

Technical analysis has limitations. It cannot predict Black Swan events (unexpected regulatory changes, geopolitical crises, pandemics). It works best in trending and range-bound markets but struggles during news-driven gaps. The most successful Indian traders use technical analysis for timing (when to enter and exit) while using fundamental analysis for selection (which stocks to trade). This combined approach leverages the strengths of both methodologies.

India Context

Widely practiced on Zerodha Kite, TradingView, and other Indian platforms. 50-DMA and 200-DMA are the most respected moving averages. Options OI data serves as a unique technical input.
